The Guided Participation Relationship Workshop by Blair Armstrong

  • La Fleur Room, The Quality Inn 180 Bay Street Sault Ste. Marie, ON, P6A 6S2 Canada (map)

Most interventions for children with Autism involve mainly training behaviours and skills. Your dreams for your child likely extend far beyond a set of skills. Many parents share that they wish for their child to be able to engage in meaningful ways, be more flexible, be intrinsically motivated, have friendships, and experience greater independence.

In every culture for countless millennia, parents and children have engaged in an emotion-based and developmental process known as Guided Participation. Guided Participation is the universal learning process which children join and apprentice together with more competent guides. It is the way that all children can learn to relate to and engage with others, and become dynamic thinkers and problem solvers. The Relationship Development Intervention™ program seeks to restore the natural Guided Participation Relationship (Mind Guiding) by training parents and caregivers to connect with their child and repair the breakdowns in the Mind Guiding relationship.

Blair is an experienced RDI™ Consultant and a 25 year veteran working with families of children with Autism and other differences. He will be your guide to understanding this process and gaining valuable insights and specific tools that will help to build a guiding relationship with your child or the children you work with. He will also address obstacles to guiding and how to work through moments when we or our child become anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed.
